I’LL NEVER CALL HIM MY OLD MAN written by Dan Blakeslee 6/17/20 ©2023 I’ll never call him my old man, Because he’s ageless understand. Forever young at heart, Though he’s got some battle scars. I’ll never call him my old man. I’ll never call him my old man. Though he’s got some shakin’ in his hands. From helpin’ pave the way, Of the man I am today. I’ll never call him my old man. Dad you taught me lessons I could never learn at school. Equal parts of play it straight and a little of break the rules. On this ship of fools I am out here dodgin’ whales. Dad you’re the wind in my sails. I’ll never call him my old man. He worked hard the sea and the land. Showed how there’s beauty in the rust. And a diamond ‘neath the dust. I’ll never call him my old man. I’ll never call him my old man. Don’t get caught without a compass or a plan. He taught me how to laugh, And that cryin’ is just a bath. I’ll never call him my old man. Dad you taught me lessons I could never learn at school. Equal parts of play it straight and a little of break the rules. On this ship of fools I am out here dodgin’ whales. Dad you’re the wind in my sails.

Road Hymns 03:45
ROAD HYMNS written by Dan Blakeslee 4/29/18 ©2023 Stay current, or get washed by the tide. I’m breaking the rules but not looking to hide. At your party pardon me if I yawn. It’s just a room of suits, With a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on. I may be wandering the lonely streets. Guided by the angel riding next to me. And my road hymns. Stay current, though it may lead to sin. I’ll sit by the pool watching the fools rush in. I’m an alley cat on a ride hard to hitch, I ain’t got no thumb, But got it pretty good here in the ditch. I may be wandering the lonely streets. Guided by the angel riding next to me. And my road hymns.

PEOPLE OF PEACE written by Dan Blakeslee on 2/2/17 ©2023 Here is a song for everyone. Let’s all just live no more fists be thrown. We are all children of this world, So pass the bread and drop the stone. Let’s be people of peace, not pieces of people. Through these clouds let love in. People of peace, not pieces of people. Through these clouds let love win. Something we’ve lost in this confusion. The human race wasn’t made to win or lose. War is ugly no matter which side you’re on. What if you didn’t have to choose? We’d be people of peace, not pieces of people. Through these clouds let love in. People of peace, not pieces of people. Through these clouds let love win.

Fools Gold 03:23
FOOLS GOLD written by Dan Blakeslee on 3/20/17 ©2023 I’ve got new blues for this world. When raising children the games are different these days. Don’t follow the leader or get lost in that maze. It’s like watching cartoons, except no one‘s laughin’. How will he find his gold with no rainbow? You can’t total the sum without equals. Stick it to the man, anyway you can. He’s a liar, he’ll soon expire, he’s fired! He’s kissin’ babies, but they’re cryin’. Cause their food can’t grow in the soil. He’s not worried cause his karats won’t spoil. The first people of our land, you treat like cattle. Hide it with fake news for your primetime show. Shove your pipeline where the sun won’t go. Stick it to the man, anyway you can. He’s a liar, he’ll soon expire, he’s fired!

POSITIVELY YOURS written by Dan Blakeslee on 6/5/14 ©2023 Sometimes life moves way too fast. If you get stuck in the quicksand, I’ll offer my hand to you. 13 is lucky, same with 7 and 69. I’ll help you get up on your feet, I’ll be your horseshoe. Be an optimist with a vision to tell. Get your hand on the wheel, The other in the wishing well. A little struggle in your life, Is only there to help you see. Even walls of a prison can’t hold positivity. No one is squeaky clean. Everybody’s got to get dirty at times. So when your draggin’ in the mud, Know that you’re grounded. Be an optimist with a vision to tell. Get your hand on the wheel, The other in the wishing well. I’ll give it to you a 45… Listen to it all night long. When you wake up in the morning, You may smile in the early dawn. Be an optimist with a vision to tell. Get your hand on the wheel, The other in the wishing well.

DEAREST ANNIE written by Dan Blakeslee on 5/8/20 ©2023 Dearest Annie, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing from quarantine, together we’re going through hell. Today a flower bloomed from a box in the basement. Words you wrote to me 30 years ago. It came Canadian post, and it came from your heart. So I’ll dust off my reply, at least it’s a start. There’s still time to bring sunshine, And light to a friend. Time to grow a new vine, Bring light in again. Back when we met in a little village by the sea. I was clearing tables, you were with your family. Then we saw that moon, as it hung over old Quebec. It’s still follows me, I guess it never left. And at the end of that summer, I had to go to school. Once a crazy boy, now a crazy man… still a crazy fool! There’s still time to bring sunshine, And light to a friend. Time to grow a new vine, Bring light in again. I get a tear in my eye, every time I hear that song… “Ne Me Quitte Pas”, So I am writing you, for that I can’t be wrong. There’s still time to bring sunshine, And light to a friend. Time to grow a new vine, Bring light in again.

ALMOST IN MEXICO written by Dan Blakeslee on 5/4/19 ©2023 I was rambling through Texas down in El Paso. I was headed to Rosa’s, I could eat a cow whole. I wasn’t paying attention, I was fiddlin’ the radio. I almost crossed the Rio Grande down to Mexico. Never had trouble with the border patrol, The only weed I’ve got is tumblin’. But I will gladly be accused of trippin’ on the road. I was looking at them mountains eatin’ my rice and beans. When a state trooper sat next to me looking mighty mean. He was givin’ the hairy eyeball, starin’ at my mustache. So I bolted through the back door like I was takin’ all the cash. Never had trouble with the border patrol, The only weed I’ve got is tumblin’. But I will gladly be accused of trippin’ on the road. I know one day I’ll get there right now time is short. I’ll even comb my hair and produce my passport. Just give me sarsaparilla, no need for coke to snort. I’ll dance with señorita‘s instead of spending time in court.

"OVERWHELMED AND UNDERPAID" written by Dan Blakeslee on 2/3/18 ©2023 Dan Blakeslee Today it seems all the flags are flyin' at half mast. How come everythings broke... it should be made to last? I'd get down and pray, but nobody listens these days. We're all overwhelmed and underpaid. With some walkin' so tall how can we see eye to eye? Instead of building these walls we should be side by side. I'd get down and pray, but nobody listens these days. We're all overwhelmed and underpaid. Every morning a roll of the dice or just stay in bed. These days it's cloudy with the vultures circlin' overhead. I'd get down and pray, but nobody listens these days. We're all overwhelmed and underpaid. When it's all dried up and gone will you still be actin' cool. When the tears you cry could never fill your swimming pool. I'd get down and pray, but nobody listens these days. We're all overwhelmed and overworked. All overwhelmed and underpaid.

ROADSIDE ANGEL written by Dan Blakeslee on 3/27/15 ©2023 Dan Blakeslee Been cooped up for too long so I took off in my car. I didn’t think this itch would turn into a scar. I thought it was just another bump up on the track. This one left me stranded no way to get back. Houston we have a problem… But I’ve got my roadside angel comin’ through. She’s keeping back the clouds bringin‘ the skies of blue. Gambling I set my heart on the dotted line. I broke my own rules I didn’t read the sign. My fortune was exchanged for this pony I did ride. Peeling back the rind finding only rust inside. Houston we have a problem… But I’ve got my roadside angel comin’ through. She’s keeping back the clouds bringin‘ the skies of blue. Out of gas with a broken mast and Lord I felt like dying. My astrologist companion kept this hurt in’ boy from cryin’. Houston we have a problem… But I’ve got my roadside angel comin’ through. She’s keeping back the clouds bringin‘ the skies of blue.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW YOU written by Dan Blakeslee on 1/25/16 ©2023 Dan Blakeslee One evening down in Davis station, I was singin’ for the train. My voice on the air smoke laden. As morning dew in walks a maiden. Flowers began to break the concrete, As she drifted down the stairs. Enchanted the seen it bloomed, The diesel smoke and her perfume. I just want to spend the weekend with you runnin’ around. There is no need for you to buy a wedding gown. I don’t care of the outcome, I just want to know you. I just want to know you… The museum must be doing renovations, I think a painting got away. From the Moulin Rouge it seems. While subway cars hum a symphony. I saw you staring at me through the window. I want to know your name. Cause I just did the same, girl. I just did the same… girl. I just want to spend the weekend with you runnin’ around. There is no need for you to buy a wedding gown. I don’t care of the outcome, I just want to know you. I just want to know you…

PACIFIC GHOST written by Dan Blakeslee on 9/4/16 ©2023 Dan Blakeslee I’ve been a daredevil most of my life. Out there having fun not hurtin’ anyone. Always careful where I step. No need for walkin’ tall just mind that I don’t fall. Could’ve been a ghost, on the Pacific coast. In ocean waves I don’t wish to be hidin’. Could’ve been a ghost, on the Pacific coast. Today is not my day for dyin’. Although mermaids lure me in. It’s not one of my wishes to be swimmin’ with the fishes. Some lives are long, but many short-lived. I lost track at nine, this is life has no rewind. Could’ve been a ghost, on the Pacific coast. In ocean waves I don’t wish to be hidin’. Could’ve been a ghost, on the Pacific coast. Today is not my day for dyin’. I’ve got to see my new love again. Got to see my new love again. With the hurricane blowin’. As I hang onto this mountain. With the hurricane blowin’, I will climb this mountain. I WILL climb this mountain!

NEW YEARS CAROL written by Dan Blakeslee on 12/31/20 ©2023 Dan Blakeslee Through darkness please lead me home. Guide me through the storm. I’m tired weary and worn. And praise the new year born. Bells will ring… Angels sing… Good tidings bring… Tonight with hope in my heart. May peace and love be the start. Angels please watch over me. And help to set my burdens free. Bells will ring… Angels sing… Good tidings bring…

about

I recorded the songs for "Road Hymns" in locations all over New England with a field recorder in places that have been sacred to me throughout my musical career and my life. Each song has a different audible experience for the listener. For example: I recorded a song under a lilac tree in an arboretum and you can hear the sounds of birds overhead. Another was recorded by the ocean on Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine with the waves caressing the shore, also in the cabin of my Dad's sailboat and my Mom's greenhouse. These spaces I recorded these songs in have been there for me in the darkest of times and when things were the most fruitful always centering me.
